Welcome to episode 1 of “Behind the image” with Sky lark Fotos.
Its late September 2024 and we decided to take a trip to Tollymore forrest park in Newcastle Co Down. An awesome location for Autumnal photos. We were a little early to get the best Autumn results, normally its best to wait till late October or early November to get the best results, however for todays trip we are looking to capture some different elements from our previous visits.
We love our visits to this location, its rich history and variation of sites and locations across the 630 hectare estate are a photographers dream.
The Shimna river winds it way through the park and offers stunning views and ample opportunities for stunning photography.
There are 2 sets of stepping stones, definitely our favourite part and something we make sure to photograph every time we visit.
There’s also a couple of bridges that are great to photograph, Foleys bridge is a great example and compositions can be had from a number of angles for a variety of shots.
On this visit the water levels were quite low, the rainfall had been scarce in the weeks up to it. This meant the flow across the stepping stones was pretty soft but there’s always an opportunity for a shot. In the video we explain how we go for a tighter shot and go through the process of creating a 3 shot HDR image to maintain the details in the image and blend the perfect exposure.
Tollymore is a fascinating place and very popular with Photographers but its a great place for a hike and many other activities, nestled at the foot of the Mournes and close to Newcastle its a great location for a weekend escape
